History of Kumihimo Kumihimo is the Japanese art of making braid. “Kumi” – to plait or come together. “Himo” – string or cord.
It
dates back thousands of years, and was used by the Samurai, to lace
& decorate their armor and scabbards. Kumihimo has been, and still
is today, used as an obi-jime, the cord securing the obi, the kimono
sash.
In
the 21st century, it’s uses are many and varied. Kumihimo has found
it’s place in the world of fashion as jewellery, belts, and
enhancements on garments. Kumihimo can be used to make braids for
computer accessories, mobile phones and digital cameras. There are many
beautiful and unusual threads and beads available now days, that can be
used to make truly unique braids. With the advent of the Kumihimo disc, braiding can be done by anyone, any age, anywhere.
